Nelson Tasman Economy Surges Ahead of National Growth
Nelson Tasman's economy has shown strong growth in the year to June 2026, according to provisional estimates. The region's GDP grew by 2.7%, outperforming New Zealand's national growth of 1.7%. This marks Nelson Tasman as the third-fastest growing economy in the country.
Tasman district led the way with a 3.5% increase, while Nelson posted a solid 2.0% rise. Consumer spending remained relatively resilient, with card transactions rising by 2.2% compared to national growth of 0.6%. However, inflation has taken its toll on household budgets, leading to lower sales volumes.
The primary sector has benefited from strong horticulture export prices, which rose by 9.5% in the year to June 2026. Seafood exports were more subdued, increasing by just 1.4%. Tourism activity also showed steady growth, with international guest nights rising by 7.0%
Residential construction activity strengthened, with house consents rising by 18% across the region. Nelson led the increase with a 35% growth in consent levels, bringing them back into line with the long-term regional average. The number of businesses operating in Nelson Tasman increased by 0.9%, to an annual average of 14,331.
