A cultural reception in Wellington, New Zealand celebrated the academic and study experiences of New Zealanders in China. The event highlighted the strong cultural connections between the two countries.

Katrina Sutich, general manager of tertiary policy under New Zealand's Ministry of Education, emphasized that education is a foundation for key aspects of the New Zealand-China relationship. She noted that China remains a top destination for New Zealand students choosing to study abroad in Asia.

Clare Fearnley, a former New Zealand ambassador to China, shared her own experience of studying language in China. She expressed gratitude for having had this opportunity and mentioned that she still communicates with her teacher who lives in China.

Amy Rutherford, director of the International Office at Victoria University of Wellington, discussed how her experience as an international student in China shaped her cross-cultural understanding and global perspectives. Her university co-builds a Confucius Institute with China's Xiamen University, which has helped thousands of young New Zealanders learn the Chinese language and culture.

Tang Jun, counselor for education, science, and culture affairs at the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand, mentioned that China is now in the opening year of the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030). He noted that emerging sectors such as clean energy, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and sustainable agriculture are creating broader opportunities for young New Zealanders to study and pursue research in China.
