TSX Tumbles Amid Trade Tensions
The TSX composite index dropped by almost 300 points on Friday despite the latest GDP report showing a strengthening economy. The decline was attributed to ongoing trade tensions and fears of renewed tariffs between Canada and the US.
Carol Schleif, chief market strategist at BMO Wealth Management, noted that while the GDP report showed strong growth, the markets were influenced by concerns about potential trade disputes.
Schleif suggested taking Friday's market moves with a grain of salt due to the late summer trading hours and reduced activity. The S&P/TSX composite index closed at 36,553.92, while the Dow Jones industrial average was down 9.45 points at 53,559.99.
The Canadian central bank's decision on interest rates next week is also being closely watched, particularly with trade talks between Canada and the US having fallen apart. However, Schleif expressed optimism about the TSX's resilience, citing its year-to-date return of 15%.
