New Zealand Budget Forecast Revised Downwards Amid Economic Recovery
New Zealand's government has revised its budget forecast, expecting a smaller deficit and lower debt than initially projected. The Treasury predicts an operating balance before gains and losses (OBEGAL) deficit of NZ$8.73 billion ($4.94 billion) in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027, compared to the May Budget forecast of NZ$14.09 billion.
The improved results are partly due to higher tax revenue from a better-than-expected economy last financial year and lower government spending than anticipated. However, Finance Minister Nicola Willis warned that there are risks associated with global instability, particularly in the Middle East.
The updated forecast suggests the country's economy is gradually recovering, but growth remains uneven. The Treasury projects inflation will return to the 1% to 3% target band by the second quarter of 2027.
