New Zealand Bus Industry Contributes Over $1 Billion to Economy Annually
A new report by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) has confirmed that the country's bus and coach industry contributes more than $1 billion to its economy annually.
The report, commissioned by the Bus and Coach Association of New Zealand (BCA), found that the industry generates $1.069 billion in GDP annually while supporting 11,750 jobs across New Zealand.
BCA Chief Executive Delaney Myers says the research provides a rare picture of the scale of an industry whose value extends well beyond operating vehicles.
The report also highlights the industry's strong safety record compared with private vehicle travel and notes that bus patronage in public transport has recovered strongly, with public buses recording 141.2 million passenger boardings in 2025, above pre-COVID levels.
