New Zealand Dollar Holds Near Yearly Low Amid Strong US Dollar

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is holding steady around the 0.5600 mark against the US Dollar (USD) during Tuesday's Asian trading session. The pair is hovering just above its lowest level since November 2025, which was reached the previous day. The NZD received a slight boost from a survey by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER), which showed that business confidence improved significantly in the third quarter of 2026. Additionally, expectations that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) will raise its Official Cash Rate (OCR) on October 28 are providing some support to the NZD/USD pair.

The USD remains strong, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly conflicts involving Yemen's Houthi group and potential Israeli actions against Iran. This safe-haven demand for the USD is capping the upside for the NZD. The deepening fiscal crisis in France is also contributing to higher US bond yields, further strengthening the USD. However, USD bulls are adopting a cautious approach as they await more clarity on the Federal Reserve's future policy path.

Last week's US economic data indicated easing inflationary pressures and a weak Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report, which reduced market expectations for an immediate Fed rate hike in October. Nevertheless, traders still anticipate a rate hike by the end of the year. The focus will now shift to the release of the FOMC meeting Minutes on Wednesday, along with speeches from influential FOMC members and developments in the Middle East crisis, which could influence the USD and the NZD/USD pair.

The fundamental outlook suggests that the USD is likely to continue its upward trend, which may limit any significant gains for the NZD/USD pair. The US Dollar has been the strongest performer over the last 30 days, particularly against the New Zealand Dollar, with a 4.79% increase.
