New Zealand Dollar Stalls Amid China's Economic Slowdown
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD/USD) has stalled, unable to make gains despite a hawkish stance from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and a soft US Dollar. The currency is currently holding at around 0.5900, but this is due in part to slower-than-expected industrial production and retail sales data from China, which has weighed on demand for commodity currencies like the Kiwi.
The weak US Dollar is also contributing to the NZD's lack of momentum, as August's cooler data has trimmed bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike. However, this support is being offset by the recent slowdown in Chinese economic activity, which has sent shockwaves through markets and impacted currencies tied to Chinese demand.
The situation with Iran has also added uncertainty to oil prices, which could have both positive and negative effects on the NZD/USD pair. On one hand, higher energy costs can be a drag on net importers like New Zealand, but they also feed into inflation, which is currently a key concern for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
