New Zealand Reserve Bank Hikes Cash Rate Amid Inflation Concerns
New Zealand's Reserve Bank lifted its cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.75% on Wednesday, signaling further tightening ahead.
The decision was a clear consensus among policymakers, according to Reserve Bank of New Zealand Monetary Policy Committee member Carl Hansen.
Hansen explained that the central bank agreed monetary conditions had been stimulative and action was needed to reinforce its commitment to returning inflation to target.
The central bank will closely monitor whether higher energy costs from Middle East-related supply shocks are feeding into more persistent domestic inflation through wages, business pricing plans, and inflation expectations.
