New Zealand Voters Prioritize Economy and Social Issues
New Zealanders are most concerned about the economy and social issues ahead of the country's general election, according to a Gallup poll.
The poll asked over 1,000 New Zealanders what they believed was the most important problem their country faced currently, with nearly three in ten respondents naming the economy as their top concern. Social issues such as discrimination, racism, poverty, and inequality came second at just under twenty percent.
In comparison to other countries surveyed by Gallup, New Zealand's emphasis on social issues stands out, particularly when compared to Australia where food and shelter was named as the most pressing issue, followed closely by the economy. Globally, economic concerns dominated responses, with the economy being cited as the top problem by nearly thirty percent of respondents.
The poll found that people's understanding of what constitutes 'the economy' varies significantly depending on their location. For some it means high prices and low wages, for others unemployment or an inability to afford housing or food.
