New Zealand's international education sector has made significant strides in recovery since the pandemic-induced border closures. According to Education Minister Erica Stanford, export earnings have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, reaching $4.295 billion in 2025.

Despite a lower number of international students than before the pandemic, with only 92,580 enrolled in 2025 compared to 115,705 in 2019, the sector's resilience is evident. Stanford highlighted that these students contribute significantly to the economy, spending an average of $45,776 per year in New Zealand.

The recovery is broadening across the education system, with universities recording a 14% growth in international student enrolments between January and April 2026. Schools saw a 9% increase, while private training establishments experienced a 6% rise.
