Rising Gilt Yields Put UK Growth Plan Under Pressure

The UK government's efforts to boost growth and regional investment are being undermined by rising gilt yields, which have brought borrowing costs close to levels last seen nearly two decades ago.

The UK 10-year gilt yield has risen to around 5.16%, making every new spending commitment more expensive and reducing the government's room for maneuver without adding to borrowing pressure.

Chancellor Healey announced a £150 million fund for fast-growing companies in northern England, but the amount is small compared to the size of the UK economy and public finances.

The focus has shifted from the individual fund to whether the government has a plan large enough to change the growth picture. The political response has been less about the specifics of the announcement and more about the overall strategy.
