Nick Scarlett, a seasoned financial services leader with over three decades of experience, has been appointed as the new executive director of the Securities Industry Association (SIA). Scarlett brings a wealth of expertise from roles in New Zealand and Asia, including positions at AIG, AXA, and AMP, as well as governance work with the Financial Services Council.
The SIA, which represents sharebroking, wealth management, and investment banking firms, aims to reposition New Zealand’s capital markets. Scarlett’s appointment comes at a critical time as the industry seeks to enhance its contribution to the economy. He expressed enthusiasm about re-engaging with capital markets, highlighting the need for policy development in New Zealand to keep pace with global competitors.
Scarlett succeeds Bridget MacDonald, who led the SIA for eight years. He will officially take on the role on October 19. Carl Blanchard, chair of the SIA, emphasized Scarlett’s skillset and history of working with stakeholders, noting his alignment with the association’s goals of engaging with government and regulators, supporting companies listing on the NZX, and creating investment opportunities for Kiwis.
The SIA’s priorities include fostering a productive economy through deep capital markets and ensuring New Zealand remains competitive in attracting capital.
