Nigeria-US Rate Gap Shrinks, Raising Capital Flow Concerns

The gap between Nigeria’s and the United States’ interest rates is shrinking, sparking concerns about capital flows and the appeal of naira-denominated assets. In September, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) made its most significant rate cut in nearly two decades, slashing the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by 350 basis points to 23%. This move came just days after the US Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 3.75-4%, widening the divergence in monetary policies.

The narrowing yield advantage on Nigerian assets could deter foreign investors from holding naira securities. However, Nigeria’s stronger economic fundamentals, including a 4.43% year-on-year GDP growth in Q2 2026, a decline in headline inflation to 15.39% in August, and rising external reserves, provide the CBN with some leeway to ease monetary policy. External reserves have climbed above $54.7 billion, while the naira has remained stable around N1,329, N1,331 to the dollar.

The CBN’s rate cut aims to lower borrowing costs and stimulate economic activity. However, the narrowing rate differential could test Nigerian financial markets in the final quarter, as US yields become more attractive. The Federal Government may benefit from lower Treasury bill and bond yields, reducing borrowing costs and refinancing burdens. Banks and businesses could access cheaper credit, though the full impact of the rate cut may not be immediate due to the CBN’s tight liquidity framework.

Sustained high oil prices, with Brent crude trading around $100 per barrel, could bolster Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings and government revenues. The CBN’s ability to maintain monetary easing will depend on continued improvements in inflation, naira stability, and foreign reserves. The upcoming IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok and global trade developments will also influence capital flows and market reactions.
