Nigeria's Economic Woes: The Real Scandal is Not the Handbag
Nigeria's economic woes have been laid bare by the outrage over a £131,000 handbag allegedly owned by Margaret Obi.
The figure has sparked widespread anger and criticism, but rather than targeting the woman carrying the bag, experts argue that the real issue lies with the value of the naira.
When converted into naira at today's exchange rate, the £131,000 handbag becomes an eye-watering amount, but this is not necessarily what happened. The person buying the bag did not walk into a British shop with hundreds of millions of naira and hand it over; the item was priced in pounds and presumably paid for in pounds.
The weakness of the naira is not the fault of Britain or Margaret Obi, but rather decades of economic mismanagement, structural weaknesses, policy failures, fiscal indiscipline, dependence on oil, foreign-exchange distortions, and repeated currency adjustments.
