Nikkei 225 Surges Amid Interest Rate Hike Speculation
The Nikkei 225 rose by 506 points, or 0.74%, to 69,220.25 on Monday in Tokyo, pushing back toward record territory it briefly touched last week. Despite a report from Reuters indicating that the Bank of Japan is considering an interest rate hike as early as September, the index gained momentum throughout the day.
The advance came despite concerns about the effect of higher interest rates on the yen and the profitability of export-oriented companies. A stronger yen could weigh on the value of overseas earnings converted back into domestic currency, potentially impacting the competitiveness of Japanese exporters.
The Nikkei has been one of the standout performers among major global equity indices in 2026, gaining over 58% over the trailing twelve months as of the most recent full-year comparison. The index has traded within a 52-week range of 41,835.17 to 72,831.73.
