Nikkei Extends Gains Despite Cautious Sentiment Ahead of BOJ Meeting

The Nikkei Stock Average rose on the 17th, closing at 64,136.25, up 213.25 points from the previous day.

The market gained momentum after the U.S. Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decided on its first rate hike in three years, and Fed Chair Warsh signaled a hawkish stance, sending all three major U.S. stock indexes lower the previous day.

However, the Tokyo market opened more than 700 yen higher due to the rate hike being largely priced in and the yen's depreciation against the dollar in currency markets.

The index briefly dipped into negative territory in the afternoon but recovered to close more than 200 yen higher due to broad-based buying across various stocks.
