Nikkei Gains on Wall Street Rally and Falling Oil Prices
Japan's Nikkei share average gained ground on Tuesday, supported by a positive close on Wall Street and a drop in crude oil prices. The Nikkei rose 0.2% to 70,081.53 during the morning session, while the broader Topix climbed 0.4% to 4,163.61. Of the Nikkei's 225 components, 140 advanced, 82 declined, and three remained unchanged.
U.S. markets had seen gains overnight, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite reaching a record high, driven by strong performances from companies like Nvidia. In Japan, tech stocks showed mixed results, with Advantest rising 1.7%, while SoftBank Group fell 2.7%. Nomura Securities strategist Wataru Akiyama noted that investors are reassessing stock valuations relative to current prices.
The decline in crude oil prices also played a role, benefiting Japan, which relies heavily on imported energy, particularly from the Middle East. Later in the day, investors will monitor a 10-year Japanese government bond auction, with yields at multi-decade highs due to concerns over fiscal policies and global bond market selloffs. Additionally, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda is scheduled to speak after the market close, potentially offering insights into future interest rate decisions.
