North Dakota's Exports to Canada Hang in Balance as Trade Tensions Escalate
North Dakota's export economy is facing significant challenges due to the recent breakdown in trade talks between the US and Canada. The two countries have enacted reciprocal 50% tariffs on each other's goods, which could severely impact North Dakota's $7 billion annual exports to Canada.
Representative Julie Fedorchak noted that 80% of North Dakota's exported products go to Canada, making it the state's number one international trading partner. The sudden increase in trade barriers was triggered last Saturday when President Trump placed a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Fedorchak met with the General Counsel for the Canadian Consulate to discuss ideas and potential solutions to resolve the issue quickly. She expressed concern that the prolonged trade standoff could have a major impact on North Dakota businesses, particularly farmers who are already dealing with inflation.
