North Sea Oil Workers Strike Threatens UK Fuel Supply
Over 160 offshore oil workers employed by Apache have voted to strike, with the Unite union warning that industrial action could start this month across seven North Sea assets. The strike is driven by a pay dispute, and Unite claims the action could severely disrupt UK fuel supplies by shutting down the entire Forties pipeline system.
The dispute centers on Apache's offer of a 4% pay increase, which Unite general secretary Sharon Graham described as corporate greed. Apache, however, maintains that the offer is fair and reflective of the workers' already high earnings. The company, along with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, disputed claims of widespread disruption, asserting that contingency plans will keep the crude oil pipeline operational.
The strike threat comes amid surging global fuel prices and rising UK inflation, exacerbated by ongoing international conflicts. The potential disruption to the UK's fuel supply adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile energy market.
