Northland Businesses Emphasize Strengths Over Size in Global Trade
A recent series of events, 'Global Shifts, Local Future,' aimed to connect Northland businesses with experienced exporters and trade leaders. The goal was to provide practical insights on navigating changing global markets.
The events, hosted by the Northland Regional Council, took place in Waitangi and Whangārei on September 29. Over 130 attendees from various sectors, including manufacturing and primary industries, gathered to explore new opportunities.
Vangelis Vitalis, Deputy Secretary Trade and Economic at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, emphasized New Zealand's reliance on international trade. He noted that one in four jobs in New Zealand depends on exports, making it a crucial aspect of the country's economy.
The events highlighted Northland's strong export sector, with around $2.6 billion worth of goods and services exported in 2025, an eight percent increase from the previous year. Attendees were encouraged to focus on their strengths and find markets where Northland products can create value.
