NZ Election Uncertainty Sparks Fears Over Policy Reversals
New Zealand's upcoming election is causing unease among investors and businesses due to the possibility of policy reversals. The current government, led by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, has implemented several changes since taking office in late 2023, including reviving mining and reinstating offshore oil and gas exploration.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) was returned to a single inflation-focused mandate, dropping the employment mandate added by the previous Labour government. If elected, Labour has signalled it would restore that dual mandate, among other policy reversals.
Luxon's government blames the central bank's dual mandate for allowing inflation to run too high. However, some economists warn that restoring the dual mandate could complicate efforts to bring inflation under control and may lead to a slower return of inflation to target.
