NZ Seniors Struggle as Cost of Living Crisis Bites
New Zealand's ageing population is struggling to make ends meet due to the rising cost of living, according to a recent survey. The 'Silver Dollar Report 2026' found that nearly half (49%) of those over 50 years old say covering essential expenses has become harder in the past year.
The report, conducted by New Zealand Seniors Insurance in partnership with consumer research group MYMAVINS, surveyed over 500 people. Key findings included:
More than 7 in 10 (71%) are concerned that the cost of living is affecting their financial security.
Three in five (60%) feel their retirement savings are inadequate.
The rising cost of groceries is a major concern, with 80% citing it as their top worry. Nearly half (57%) have cut back on food and grocery spending.
The report also found that close to two in five (39%) are very or extremely worried about running out of money in retirement.
