NZD Holds Steady Against Stronger US Dollar on Rate Expectations
The New Zealand dollar held steady against a stronger US dollar on Tuesday, as traders weighed resilient risk appetite against growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates higher for longer.
The NZD/USD pair traded in a narrow range around 0.6050, with limited downside despite the greenback's strength. The US dollar index edged up as Treasury yields remained elevated on solid US economic data and hawkish comments from Fed officials.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is expected to hold its official cash rate at 5.5% in August, but markets are pricing in a potential cut later this year. This contrasts with the Fed, where rate cuts are seen as less imminent, keeping the interest rate differential in favor of the US dollar.
The RBNZ's Governor Adrian Orr has emphasized that policy will remain restrictive until inflation is firmly within the 1-3% target band. The New Zealand dollar found support from strong domestic data, including a rebound in business confidence and steady dairy prices.
