NZD Holds Steady as USD Retreats Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) held steady against the US Dollar (USD) on Friday, despite the Greenback's retreat. The NZD/USD pair traded around 0.5665, virtually unchanged from the previous day.
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the value of the USD against a basket of six major currencies, fell by 0.22% to trade at around 101.00. This decline came despite elevated US Treasury yields, which held near 5.19%, slightly below Thursday's peak of 5.22%.
The mixed signals from the latest US economic data contributed to the Greenback's pullback. The final University of Michigan (UoM) Consumer Sentiment Index for September came in at 48.1, up from the preliminary estimate but still below August's reading. However, inflation expectations remained elevated, with a one-year measure standing at 4.6%, and a five-year expectation holding at 3.4%.
The geopolitical landscape also played a role in shaping market sentiment. Reports of a potential phased agreement between the US and Iran provided some relief, but harsh comments from officials on both sides kept the risk of renewed escalation alive.
