NZD Struggles as Softer Inflation Expectations Challenge RBNZ Hawks
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is struggling to gain traction as softer inflation expectations challenge the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's (RBNZ) hawkish stance. The NZD/USD pair traded around 0.5850 on Thursday, down 0.15% on the day.
The RBNZ's two-year inflation expectations eased to 2.34% in the third quarter of 2026 from 2.53% in the previous quarter, while one-year inflation expectations stood at 2.6%. The decline in inflation expectations reduces the need for further monetary tightening by the RBNZ.
Financial markets had previously shown greater confidence in another rate increase, which could support the Kiwi. However, lower inflation expectations temper those expectations, and the NZD/USD pair remains under pressure.
The US Dollar (USD) also faced challenges due to subdued US inflation data, with the Producer Price Index (PPI) slowing sharply to 4.7% YoY from 5.5% previously. This reinforces the disinflationary signal delivered by the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
