NZD Tumbles as Australia Hikes Rate for Fourth Time This Year
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) experienced a decline after Australia's Reserve Bank raised its cash rate to 4.60% on Tuesday, marking its fourth hike of 2026.
This decision by the RBA, which was unanimous and accompanied by a statement indicating that the economy is slowing down, had an impact on currency traders.
The NZD/USD pair closed below 0.5650 for the first time in its slide since Tuesday's break, reflecting the market's interpretation of the rate hike as 'a hike without a sequel', implying limited further tightening by the RBA.
This contrasts with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), which raised its Official Cash Rate to 2.75% on September 2, sparking a decline in the Kiwi when Governor Breman signaled uncertainty about future hikes.
