NZD Under Pressure as Rate Gap Hits Rare Territory
The New Zealand dollar (NZD) has been under pressure in recent weeks due to the widening gap between US and NZ interest rates. The RBNZ's dovish hike earlier this month, combined with a hawkish repricing of the US rate outlook, has sent NZD/USD to fresh multi-month lows.
The correlation between daily moves in NZD/USD and daily changes in the NZ-US two-year spread has climbed to around +0.81, putting it near the 99.6th percentile of observations since 2000. This suggests that relative front-end rates have been driving the bus for the Kiwi over recent months.
The US two-year yield advantage over New Zealand is currently at an unusually wide 87.5 basis points, sitting around the bottom 2% of observations since 2000. The prevailing bearish trend in NZD/USD has been persistent despite broader risk conditions remaining firm.
