NZD/USD on Thin Ice Ahead of Payrolls Report
The New Zealand dollar (NZD) has been experiencing significant pressure in recent weeks due to the Federal Reserve's hawkish interest rate outlook. Since August, NZD/USD has sharply declined, with the pair now trading just above 0.5639, a key support level that held last June.
According to Stonex.com, the macro and technical signals are aligned towards further weakness in NZD/USD. The Fed's interest rate outlook has driven a significant increase in NZ-US yield spreads, which remains the most consistent macro driver of the pair.
The RBNZ's hawkish stance on tightening is also being overwhelmed by the increasingly hawkish message from the Fed. Historically, oversold conditions have often led to sharp counter-trend bounces, and experts are cautioning against acting pre-emptively without a definitive break below 0.5639.
The upcoming September non-farm payrolls report will be a crucial catalyst in determining whether support breaks or the Kiwi rebounds. A weak outcome would need to be 'unquestionably weak' to force the Fed towards a more symmetric reaction function across both sides of its mandate, potentially leading to a more meaningful rebound in NZD/USD.
