NZX 50 Ends Flat as Business Confidence Improves
The New Zealand Stock Exchange's NZX 50 index remained nearly unchanged, closing at 13,700 on Tuesday after a modest gain in the prior session. The flat performance came as advances in the tech, real estate, and utilities sectors balanced out declines in consumer staples, energy, and industrials.
Market sentiment received a boost from easing oil prices and an improvement in business confidence. The New Zealand Institute of Economic Research's Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion reported a significant rise in business confidence during Q3, despite the Middle East conflict. Factors contributing to this improvement included easing inflation pressures, stable profit expectations, and increased hiring and investment.
Despite the positive outlook, investors exercised caution ahead of the upcoming release of the FOMC minutes later in the week. Notable movers included Ebos Group, which surged 3.5%, Brisco Group, which advanced 2.8%, and ANZ Group and Westpac Banking Corp, both of which rose 1.1%. On the downside, Delegat Group, South Port New Zealand, A2 Milk, and Hallenstein Glasson saw declines of 3.1%, 1.8%, 1.7%, and 1.5%, respectively.
