NZX 50 Falls as Oil Prices Rise and US Futures Dip
The New Zealand stock market, as represented by the NZX 50 index, experienced a decline on Monday morning trade. The index dropped by 17 points, equivalent to a 0.1% decrease, reaching a value of 13,795.
This downward trend continued from the previous session and was influenced by a slight fall in US stock futures. Additionally, higher oil prices persisted, which had a negative impact on sentiment due to concerns over inflation.
RBNZ Governor Anna Breman warned that if high oil prices continue, inflation could be higher than expected. Market participants were also awaiting the release of various economic indicators, including New Zealand business confidence for September and China's PMI data, which may provide clues about the Fed's monetary policy decision at its upcoming meeting.
The tech, financial, industrial, and real estate sectors contributed to the decline in the index. Specifically, early decliners included Gentrack Group (-3.4%), Brisco Group (-2.9%), Sanford (-1.5%), Summerset Group (-1.4%), Infratil (-1.1%), and Fletcher Building (-1.0%).
