NZX 50 Stalls as Oil Prices Ease and Wall Street Hits Record High
The NZX 50 saw minimal movement during Wednesday morning trading, hovering around 13,696 points. The index had remained flat in the previous session, with gains in consumer staples and real estate sectors balancing out declines in consumer discretionary and communication services.
Market sentiment received a boost from easing oil prices, which helped alleviate concerns over inflation and potential interest rate hikes. Additionally, an optimistic session on Wall Street overnight contributed to the positive outlook, as the S&P 500 reached a fresh record high, supported by strong performances from tech stocks.
Investors remained cautious ahead of the release of the FOMC minutes later in the week. Among individual stocks, Vulcan Steel led the gains with a 2.0% advance, followed by Briscoe Group and EBOS Group, each rising 1.1%. Fletcher Building also climbed 0.9%. On the downside, Hallenstein Glasson dropped 1.5%, while South Port New Zealand and Westpac Banking Corp. fell 0.7% and 0.4%, respectively.
