Oil Price Surge and Interest Rate Uncertainty Weigh on Overseas Markets
Overseas stock markets closed out the holiday-shortened week in the US on a cautious note, with most regions experiencing declines. Europe saw significant losses, with the STOXX Europe 600 dropping approximately 0.8% for the week and the Euro STOXX 50 falling about 1.4%. Germany's DAX lost roughly 2%, while France's CAC 40 dropped around 1.3%. The UK's FTSE 100 was relatively resilient but still ended lower.
The main culprit behind these losses wasn't corporate earnings, but rather the combination of rising oil prices, inflation concerns, and interest rate uncertainty. Brent crude surged around 7% during the week, trading at approximately $95 a barrel on Friday as investors assessed the US-Iran conflict's impact on energy supplies.
The European Central Bank is widely anticipating another quarter-point interest rate increase at its September 10 meeting, which has contributed to higher yields in government bonds. Germany's benchmark 10-year Bund yield was around 3.36% on Friday and headed for its fourth consecutive weekly increase.
