Oil Price Swings Cast Long Shadow Over Inflation, Bond Yields and Currencies
Oil prices have a significant impact on inflation expectations and bond yields, which in turn affect equity markets and currency pairs. According to Fiona Cincotta, StoneX Senior Market Analyst, oil is a key driver of inflation concerns across multiple markets.
Cincotta notes that oil prices matter to bond markets because they shape inflation expectations, and those expectations influence the Federal Reserve's outlook. With markets pricing a 70% probability of another rate hike, up from around 50%, any fresh rise in oil puts additional pressure on the personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge.
The Middle East is a key source of headline risk for oil prices, which can move quickly and have far-reaching implications. Cincotta explains that developments in the region can 'quickly move prices and therefore influence inflation expectations, yields, the equity markets as well as the FX market.'
