Oil Prices and Yields Fuel Identity Crisis in Forex Markets
The EUR/USD and USD/JPY pairs are being heavily influenced by crude oil futures and US Treasury yields, leading to an identity crisis among traders. The correlation between Brent oil prices and US two-year yields has been particularly strong, with the belly and long end of the curve showing the most enduring relationship.
For EUR/USD, this means that a downside break below 1.1325 support could be significant, with little technical support until 1.1200 or the 50% retracement of the January 2025 to January 2026 move at 1.1130. However, the lack of clear escalation in the Middle East may mean that the pair is stuck in a range-bound price pattern.
The link between USD/JPY and US yields remains strong, but intervention risks from Japanese authorities or the US Treasury are also a concern. A warning from Japan's FX czar, Atsushi Mimura, highlighted the undervalued yen and the potential for intervention if markets fail to respond accordingly.
