Oil Tops $100 Again, Sending UK Markets into a Tailspin

Oil prices have surpassed $100 per barrel for the first time since mid-May, causing jitters about inflation and its impact on markets. This development has led to a decline in the FTSE 100 by 0.57% on Thursday.

The rise in crude oil prices affects not just gas stations but also shipping, manufacturing, and household energy bills, which can slow spending and make inflation harder to cool down. The worry is that higher interest rates may be necessary to combat this increase in energy costs.

Meanwhile, a strong US producer prices reading has led some traders to believe that another Federal Reserve rate increase is possible ahead of the key US inflation report. Additionally, uncertainty about policy has affected other commodities, such as copper, which saw a pullback after its long run higher due to delays in deciding on tariffs.

Despite the challenges posed by high energy costs, some companies, like Shell, may benefit from higher oil prices and thus cushion the impact on the FTSE 100. This could result in the benchmark index looking steadier than the underlying market, even as many non-energy stocks face pressure.
