Oil's Shadow Falls Across Markets as Inflation Concerns Deepen
The recent surge in US Treasury yields and the strengthening dollar have left many market analysts focused on the actions of the Federal Reserve. However, a key component often overlooked is the impact of oil prices on inflation expectations, bond yields, equities, and currency markets.
Fiona Cincotta, StoneX Senior Market Analyst, notes that 'oil has been a key driver across multiple markets because of those inflationary concerns that it brings.' Oil prices have a direct link to inflation expectations, which in turn influence the Federal Reserve's outlook. With markets pricing a 70% probability of another rate hike, up from around 50%, any fresh rise in oil puts additional pressure on bond yields.
The eurozone economy is particularly vulnerable to higher energy and gas prices, with EUR/USD falling to its lowest level since late July despite the European Central Bank raising interest rates. The region's exposure to energy costs leaves it more fragile than the US economy heading into winter.
