Ontario Drives Canada's Job Market Upward with 52,000 New Positions
Statistics Canada released its latest employment numbers for July 2026, revealing a positive trend in the Canadian job market. The report shows that 75,100 new jobs were added to the economy, exceeding consensus estimates of just 20,000 positions.
This significant increase has pushed the net employment figures over the past three months (since April) to 181,100 and 196,000 compared to a year ago, resulting in the country's unemployment rate falling to 6.4%, its lowest level in two years.
The majority of these gains were driven by the private sector, which saw an increase of 57,900 employees in July 2026. Ontario reported the highest job growth among provinces in July, adding 52,000 jobs primarily in the professional, scientific, and technical services sector.
