Ontario Winemakers Urge End to US Alcohol Ban Amid Looming Tariffs
Ontario winemakers are urging politicians to lift a ban on US alcohol before a new wave of 50 percent American tariffs takes effect on August 19. The ban, imposed in March 2025 after US President Donald Trump's 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, has led to an 81 percent drop in US alcohol imports.
Data shows that Canadian wine producers have experienced a domestic boom since the ban was implemented, with local vineyards securing a monopoly over retail shelf space. However, this short-term gain is overshadowed by the potential economic threat posed by Washington.
Norman Beal, president of Peninsula Ridge Estates Winery and chair of Ontario Craft Wineries, acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating 'As much as it's being a benefit to us, the damage to our overall economy is much worse.'
The decision to restock US products in Canada may ultimately determine the survival of Canadian aluminum smelters and lumber mills.
