Pacific Link Listed as Project of National Interest
Alberta Premier Smith announced a significant victory for Canada's energy future as Pacific Link was listed as a project of national interest under the Building Canada Act. This move is expected to strengthen the country's economy, enhance energy security, and connect Canadian energy to growing global markets.
The listing of Pacific Link will create up to 140,000 jobs during construction, mostly in Alberta and British Columbia, with an additional 50,000 jobs supported per year for Albertans and Canadians through operations, ongoing production, maintenance, and trade. The project is expected to generate more than $20 billion per year when operational, significantly growing Canada's GDP.
Alberta's government will receive over $265 billion in additional royalties from the increased oil production to fill the pipeline over its 50-plus-year operation. Premier Smith emphasized that this listing sends a clear message: 'Canada is ready to build again.' He highlighted the importance of working together with Indigenous communities, industry partners, and the federal government to move Pacific Link forward.
The project will enable the transportation of one million barrels of oil per day from Canada's west coast to growing markets across the Asia-Pacific region. Trans Mountain Corporation will develop, construct, and operate the pipeline on behalf of the project proponents. The streamlined review process is expected to be completed by September 1, 2027, following which construction can begin.
