US Representative Jimmy Panetta has co-sponsored a bill aimed at reasserting Congress's role in trade, amidst the escalating US-Canada trade war. The BAD DEAL Act seeks to repeal part of the 96-year-old bill that allowed the Trump Administration to impose $20 billion in tariffs on Canadian goods without congressional approval.

Panetta believes the tariffs are causing damage to small businesses and the economy, and he thinks the bill has bipartisan appeal. However, he does not expect it to get a vote under Republican Speaker Mike Johnson.

In other news, a $6 million donation to Big Basin Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks will be used to construct a new interpretive center at Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The park is still recovering from the 2020 fire, but regrowth has been successful in some areas, with trails reopened and more planned.
