Parsons Warns Canada's Economy Faces Significant Challenges Amid Trade Tensions
Mark Parsons, vice president and chief economist at ATB Financial, delivered a passionate address to Alberta infrastructure and energy leaders during the Alberta Industrial Heartland Association conference in Edmonton last week. Parsons noted that it was a busy summer for many Canadians due to trade tensions and global events.
The tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump have had a significant impact on Canada's economy, with bond yields reaching their highest surge in 30 years. The ongoing war in Iran has also led to a massive spike in gas prices, with gas costing over $1.80 per litre in the Edmonton area and around six dollars a gallon in the United States.
Parsons emphasized that Canada's economic growth is hindered by its inability to increase productivity, which will ultimately affect consumers' pockets. He also acknowledged Alberta's economic strength, citing the province's lighter impact of tariffs on energy and a rising population as contributing factors.
