Paying in the Right Currency Can Save You Money on Ryanair Flights
Ryanair customers may be able to save money on their flights by paying in the 'right' currency, according to Martin Lewis' MoneySavingExpert team. The trick is to book each leg of the journey separately and compare the total cost with a regular return flight price.
The team found that for some routes, paying in Euros can be cheaper than Ryanair's pound price. For example, on a Warsaw to London flight, paying in Polish złoty saved 3.72% compared to paying in pounds. On an Ibiza to London flight, paying in Euro saved 6.1%. However, they also found that some currencies, such as the Hungarian Forint, can actually make flights more expensive.
MSE advises customers to search for their outbound flight as a one-way ticket and then find the return leg as a separate one-way ticket. This will show the price in the currency of the country the flight departs from. Customers should then compare this price with Ryanair's standard return price and use their bank's exchange rate instead of Ryanair's.
The team warns that this method only works if customers' cards don't come with foreign transaction fees, which can often be around 3%. They also advise against accepting Ryanair's 'guaranteed exchange rate', as it may not offer the best deal.
