PBOC Set to Guide Yuan Appreciation with USD/CNY Reference Rate
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) is set to announce its daily USD/CNY reference rate, expected to be around 6.7382. According to Reuters' estimate, a neutral setting would put the rate at 6.7414, only marginally higher than the previous fix.
The dollar index eased on Friday, but the onshore spot rate closed firmer. This has led some to speculate that the PBOC might lean more heavily on its damping mechanism to slow the yuan's advance.
Under China's managed floating exchange rate system, the renminbi (yuan) is allowed to trade within a prescribed band around a central reference rate, or midpoint, set each trading day by the PBOC. The current trading band permits the currency to move plus or minus 2% from the official midpoint during onshore trading hours.
The PBOC's determination of the midpoint involves a range of inputs, including the previous day's closing price, movements in major currencies, and domestic economic considerations such as capital flows and growth momentum. As a result, the daily fixing is often interpreted as a policy signal rather than just a technical reference point.
