Swiss Top Court Rejects E-ID Vote Challenges Over Transparency Issues
Switzerland's federal judiciary has put an end to legal challenges against last year's electronic identity referendum. The Federal Supreme Court dismissed most of the appeals on April 21, 2026, due to procedural missteps by campaign finance watchdogs and media companies.
The court determined that a significant portion of the appellants had failed to file their objections within the legally mandated windows, making substantive review impossible. This decision reinforces the principle that citizens and organizations cannot sit on alleged irregularities and raise them months later.
The 163,000 Swiss franc question at the heart of the substantive claims lay in accusations that two major media houses, Ringier and TX Group, provided in-kind support during the campaign without proper disclosure. Investigations confirmed that the contributions had not been reported within the required timeframes, a breach of Switzerland's transparency rules for political campaigns.
