Perli: Fed's Monetary Policy Framework Remains Effective with Strong Rate Control
Roberto Perli, New York Fed official in charge of managing the System Open Market Account, stated that the Federal Reserve's monetary policy implementation framework remains effective. The central bank has maintained control over short-term interest rates and kept reserves within an ample range.
Perli highlighted that Treasury bill purchases have proceeded smoothly as part of the Fed's efforts to add liquidity to the financial system. However, he noted that these steps should not be viewed as a predetermined course of action.
The New York Fed has been using Reserve Management Purchases (RMPs) of Treasury bills to maintain appropriate levels of reserves and ensure effective control over the federal funds rate. The purchases were recently reduced to zero after officials determined that the financial system had sufficient liquidity.
