Populist Rise Threatens Independent Central Banks, Bailey Warns

Andrew Bailey, the Governor of the Bank of England, has warned that the rise of populist politicians poses a serious challenge to independent central banks. Speaking at a conference at the London School of Economics, Bailey stated that central bankers must be prepared to explain their decisions to the public or risk being attacked as an 'unrepresentative elite.'

According to Bailey, populist parties often claim that they represent the authentic will of the people and view institutions like central banks as obstacles to popular sovereignty. He emphasized that legitimacy in governance should rest on the plurality of society rather than the preferences of a single group.

Bailey's comments come as Nigel Farage's Reform UK party has been gaining momentum, with Farage previously suggesting he would like to replace Bailey if Reform comes to power. In the US, former Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell faced criticism from Donald Trump over interest rate decisions, leading Bailey and other central bankers to sign a joint statement defending Powell's independence.

The Bank of England was made independent in 1997, with decisions on interest rates transferred to a nine-member monetary policy committee chaired by the Governor. Bailey believes that insulating the Bank from politics has allowed it to better fulfill its role in maintaining economic stability and promoting prosperity.
