Port of Tauranga Wins Fast-Track Approval for Major Expansion
Port of Tauranga has received fast-track approval for its major Stella Passage expansion under New Zealand's Fast-track Approvals Act 2024. This approval is subject to conditions and potential appeals, but the company views the project as essential strategic infrastructure to accommodate future freight growth.
The development will extend the Sulphur Point container berth by 385 metres in two stages and lengthen the Mount Maunganui wharves by 315 metres within the port's existing footprint. It also includes land reclamation behind the new wharves and dredging of the passage, marking a major capacity upgrade.
Port of Tauranga operates New Zealand's largest and busiest port, handling containerised and bulk cargo for importers and exporters. The company focuses on supporting national and international freight flows, providing critical maritime infrastructure and services that underpin New Zealand's export-driven economy.
