Pound Gains on Australian Dollar as RBA Expectations Shift
The Pound to Australian Dollar (GBP/AUD) exchange rate surged last week as market expectations for Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) interest rate hikes softened. The pair climbed to AU$1.9032, up approximately 0.9% from the start of the week. The RBA raised rates by 25 basis points to 4.6%, but Governor Michele Bullock's dovish tone disappointed investors, leading to a selloff in the Australian Dollar (AUD).
The AUD faced further pressure after Australia's August inflation data fell short of forecasts, while a rebound in export data later in the week helped stabilize the currency. Meanwhile, the Pound (GBP) strengthened on positive UK economic data and optimism about improved UK-EU relations, following remarks by Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
Looking ahead, the GBP/AUD exchange rate could extend gains if Australia's consumer confidence index declines further, as rising interest rates and energy costs weigh on households. The UK's economic calendar is light this week, potentially leaving the Pound's movement driven by broader market trends.
