Pound Hits Two-Week Highs Amid Oil Price Surge and Interest Rate Speculation
The British pound has been climbing against the US dollar, reaching two-week highs on Wednesday. This increase comes as oil prices have surged to over $100 a barrel due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Crude prices are now 40% higher than their February levels, putting pressure on central banks to consider raising interest rates. Britain's reliance on energy imports has led to a rise in consumer inflation to 2.9% as of July.
Despite this, money markets predict that the Bank of England will delay raising interest rates at its upcoming meeting. However, two hikes are expected by March. BoE Governor Andrew Bailey and economists express skepticism over inevitable rate hikes, yet market anticipation suggests otherwise.
Analysts note that increases in Brent oil prices significantly impact rate projections, emphasizing uncertainty surrounding fiscal and oil price factors.
