Pound Holds Firm Near Six-Month High on Rate Hike Expectations

The pound is holding its ground near a six-month high against the dollar due to expectations of interest rate hikes by the Bank of England this year. The UK's economic data through the first half of the year has been strong, leading to market anticipation of at least 25 basis points in interest rates.

However, most analysts and economists see no change in interest rates, which could lead to a decline in the currency towards the end of the year. Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING, anticipates the euro to gain on the pound because he believes the BoE will tighten less than current market expectations.

The UK government's fiscal policies are also under scrutiny, with soaring government debt and high gilt yields among the concerns. The upcoming budget in October is expected to clarify funding choices amid fiscal constraints.
